Man poses as Asda worker and walks away with £40k

A conman has walked away with £40,000 from a supermarket safe after posing as a member of staff.

He then began to impersonate a member of staff giving out handfuls of Euros and other currencies in exchange for sterling to customers.

But before finishing his ‘shift’, the crook gained access to the safe for the Bureau de Change and emptied it into a bag then walked out of the store. It is understood that the sum taken was close to £40,000.

One source said:

“As the woman in the Bureau de Change was leaving he slipped into the kiosk. He started to serve customers, just giving them wedges of cash, as he clearly had no idea about exchange rates.

“He apparently wore a glove, knew the code for the safe, punched it in, and was able to empty it.

“At one point a senior member of the Asda staff walked passed while he was in the kiosk and even spoke to him but he just kept up the pretence – as cool as you like.

“He must have been caught on camera. Some of the customers got an early Christmas bonus too – getting much more than they should have done.

“Apparently the code to the bureau safe had not been changed for ages. He must have been in a few times and done his homework.”

A spokesman for GMP said that a 22-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. She has been bailed until next month. However the hunt continues for the mystery man – and the money.

An investigation was launched after police were called at 3.45pm on July 29 after store bosses reported the theft.

Asda say they were assisting police with enquiries.
